Audi began as the German automobile company, Wanderer, founded in 1885. However, the name Audi wasn’t established until the 20th century when a founder’s son suggested the brand name should become the German word for “whisper.”
It wasn’t until World War II that the Audi logo was born. The logo consists of 4 interlocking rings, which, at the time, stood for the four brands that made up Audi’s predecessor company, Auto Union. During WWII, Audi plants were utilized for military production, but reverted to producing vehicles quickly after the war ended. In 1970, Audi became an independent brand.
