History
GMC, which stands for “General Motors Company,” began its life as a part of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which was founded in 1902 by Max Grabowski. In 1908, William C. Durant took over control of the Reliance Motor Car Company and did the same for the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1909. In 1911, General Motors developed the General Motors Truck Company, and both Reliance and Rapid were brought into the new company.
In the early years, the trucks that rolled out of GMC were utilitarian. Most were used as military vehicles, dump trucks and firetrucks. As far as military vehicles go, the GMC Truck Model 16 saw military duty in WWI as a battlefield ambulance.
