Transmission Troubles: What to Look For

January 3, 2017

how to notice signs of transmission trouble

Having an issue with your transmission can be a costly repair, especially if you don’t know what common signs of transmission issues look like.

Here, you’ll find a list of some of the most common signs that your transmission should be looked at professionally.

1. Cloudy, discolored, or smelly fluid

Your transmission fluid should be red in color and odorless when everything is working fine. If your transmission fluid is cloudy or smells burnt, you may have a problem. Also, be sure that no transmission fluid is leaking on the ground when your vehicle is parked.

2. Trouble shifting gears

Gear shifting should be seamless and silent. Any noise or hesitation while shifting could indicate a transmission problem.

3. A stalling vehicle

If your vehicle stalls when coming to a stop, it could be a sign of leaking transmission fluid.

Take your care to a local ASE-certified mechanic if you are worried about your vehicle’s transmission malfunctioning. Delaying too long on these costly car issues can be an expensive mistake!
